Repair of old tendon rupture: Hand function on day 3
About the problem: why is it important to act on time?
Damage to the tendons of the flexors of the hand is one of the most insidious injuries. Unlike skin or muscles, a tendon is like a stretched string or a rubber band: when it breaks, its ends instantly shorten and diverge in different directions under the action of the muscles of the forearm.
If the operation is not carried out in the first days, the injury becomes outdated. In such cases, the muscles “get used” to the new state, the ends of the tendon become overgrown with scar tissue, and the tendon channel, along which it should slide, begins to narrow. It is much more difficult to restore such a finger than a “fresh” cut
Clinical case: hand surgery
Diagnosis: Chronic damage to the flexor tendon of the 3rd finger of the hand.
Case complexity: The patient came to us a long time after receiving the injury.
Decision: We performed a complex reconstruction of the tendon, freeing it from adhesions (scars) and restoring anatomical integrity. The use of a special technique of multi-loop suture allowed us to abandon heavy plaster bandages, which often lead to complete immobility of the joints after such operations.
Result: Why is Day 3 a win?
The video shows the result on the 3rd day after the operation.
Patients are usually afraid to move their arm this early. However, in our practice early active mobilization is the key to success. If the finger begins to work already in the first days, the tendon “cuts” its way through the tissues, preventing the scars from “gluing” it to the canal walls.
What you see in the video—free flexion of the finger already on the third day—is an indication of the jewel-like precision of the suture and the correct rehabilitation protocol. This gives the patient a 100% chance to return his hand to full life and professional activity.
