Complex restoration of the elbow joint after a severe injury
Description of the problem: Complex dislocation and fracture
A young man came to us with a combined injury: a severe dislocation of the forearm and a fracture of the head of the radial bone. This is one of the most difficult elbow injuries, as it affects both bone structures and ligaments. Without timely and accurate intervention, such a case inevitably leads to persistent contracture (immobility) of the joint and loss of the hand’s ability to work.
Solution: Team work of the surgeon and the rehabilitator
The success of this case is the result of a joint strategy of two specialists.
Surgical stage: Dislocation reduction and stable osteosynthesis of the radial head were performed. The main task was to restore the anatomy of the joint accurately enough to allow the patient to start moving as early as possible.
Rehabilitation stage: Immediately after the operation, an orthopedist-rehabilitator joined the work. Thanks to the individual joint development protocol, it was possible to avoid the formation of scars and adhesions inside the elbow.
Result: Return of function in 6 weeks
Already through 1.5 months after the injury, the patient almost completely recovered the range of motion (flexion and extension) in the elbow joint. For such a severe injury, this is an extremely short period of time, which allowed the young man to quickly return to his usual life and work.
